“Right this way, ladies.” The hostess smiled brightly as she led Alaska and Sophia to their table. They chose a quiet seafood restaurant located off the strip so they could relax and not have to worry about tourists. Most people assumed that residents of Las Vegas loved to be on the strip. But nothing could be further from the truth when it came to the majority of the city’s long time natives. Having to sit in ridiculously long traffic jams, and dealing with enormously large crowds of people was not most of their ideas of a good time. Just as the ladies sat down in their chairs, Alaska’s cell phone rung and the caller ID notified her that it was Jay.

“Sorry, I need to take this,” she apologized to Sophia.

“It’s all good girl. Go ‘head and handle yo business.”

“Thanks.” Hey, what’s up?” Alaska said cheerfully into the phone. She hadn’t talked to her friends in a while and she was glad to see that one of them had finally called to check on her. But her excitement would be short lived.

“Have you talked to Draya?” Jay questioned without even so much as a hello.

“Damn, hello to you too nigga,” Alaska replied kicking herself for actually thinking he was calling to see how she was doing, “And no I haven’t talked to her today. Why?”

“Cause I’ve been blowing up her fuckin’ phone all day and she’s not answering. She was supposed to be here two hours ago to help me with my physical therapy but she never showed up.”

“Well maybe she’s at home and she accidentally fell asleep. Did you try calling the house phone?”

“I’ve called every phone number that woman has. She hasn’t been up here in almost two days so I’m guessing she should be pretty well rested by now,” Jay said sarcastically.

“Two days?” Alaska frowned. It was one thing for Draya not to call her in the last few days, but for her not to check in with Jay either sent up a red flag.

“Why didn’t you call me before now?” Alaska asked.

“Because I thought it was nothing. We got into an argument the other night before she left and I figured her not coming back yesterday was her way of teaching me a lesson. But now she’s taking this bullshit too fuckin’ far by ignoring my calls and missing my treatment.”

“Listen, I’ll try calling her to see what’s up. She’s probably still pissed off and in need of some chill time. The last few weeks have been stressful on everybody. Once I talk to her I’ll let you know she’s okay. But I can’t force her to call you though, so you’ll have to work that out by yourself. Now I gotta go. I’ll talk to you later.”

Alaska dropped her iPhone down into her purse and sighed heavily.

“Playing Dr. Phil today, huh?’ Sophia chuckled.

Alaska rolled her eyes as she nodded her head in agreement. “Yes girl, story of my fuckin’ life,” Alaska said as both of the women started laughing.
